Marcel Cogniet "the Old Port At St Tropez, 1905"- Painter Of The South - Post-impressionism -

Much charm emanates from this evocation of the old port of Saint Tropez. In a myriad of small touches of juxtaposed colors, purple, blue, green, ochre, red, brown, yellow, Marcel Cogniet composes a universe of warmth and light specific to the south of France.
A boat, old decrepit walls, a few hanging vines, wooden utensils and a net at the foot of a low wall, just testimonies of a fisherman's life in the authentic St Tropez, the picturesque village which attracted artists at the beginning of the 20th century, before bewitching the "jet set".

Marcel Cogniet was born on March 11, 1857 in Paris and died in 1914.
Post-impressionist, landscapes will be his favorite subjects.

Acquired from the artist in 1920 by Madame Rose Châles-Ardisson.
Former collection of Jacqueline Boccador, a figure in the art market and antique dealer specializing in the Haute Epoque.

Oil on canvas in perfect condition, signed and located lower left "Marcel Cogniet - St Tropez", dated on the back "October 1905".  Size : 13,3 x 18 Inches without frame and 18,7x 23,2 Inches with its waxed wooden frame.
