Large Cloisonné Horse, China, Early 20th Century.
Chinese sculpture of a walking horse, using the cloisonné enamel technique on a gilded copper support. The decoration includes stylized masks of mythical monsters (taotie), in reference to archaic bronzes from the Shang and Zhou dynasties. The side panels of the saddle are adorned with colorful images of phoenixes (fenghuang). The background is filled with a dense pattern of colored clouds and spirals. The saddle and mane are removable elements, attached to special tenons/pins.
