Japanese Bronze Ikebana Stand With Birds And Bats – Meiji Period (1868–1912)

Imposing and finely cast, this patinated bronze ikebana stand takes the form of a lobed gourd. It is composed of two elements: a sculptural base and a removable lid pierced with slits for floral arrangement according to Japanese tradition. The entire surface is richly decorated with relief appliques depicting various species of birds, including a rooster and a hen placed prominently on the lid – symbols of vigilance and domestic harmony in Far Eastern iconography. The body is adorned with other birds in flight or perched among flowering branches, as well as bats, emblems of good luck and longevity. The underside of the base and the lid bear a circular cartouche with Japanese characters, probably an artist's signature or a mint mark dating from the Meiji period. This masterpiece reflects the excellence of Japanese metalwork at the end of the 19th century.
