Albert-ernest Carrier-belleuse (1824–1887) – Figure Holding A Torch

This important sculpture depicts a draped young woman holding a raised torch, in an elegant and balanced composition characteristic of the style of Carrier-Belleuse, one of the great French sculptors of the 19th century and Auguste Rodin’s teacher early in his career.

The quality of the craftsmanship is evident in the finesse of the modeling, the delicate facial expression, the particularly meticulous rendering of the hair, and the remarkable work on the drapery. The rich, dark brown patina is harmoniously enhanced by fire-gilded bronze accents, highlighting the crown, the belt, the sandals, and various decorative elements.

The sculpture stands on its original circular marble base and has a total height of approximately 186 cm.  Works of this size by Albert-Ernest Carrier-Belleuse rarely appear on the art market. Due to its large size, this sculpture is particularly difficult to photograph in a way that accurately conveys its proportions and presence.
