Affortunato Gory — Large Bronze Sculpture, Art Deco Dancer, Circa 1920

Artist: Affortunato Gory (italie, Actif Vers 1895–1925)

An elegant and expressive Art Deco bronze sculpture by Affortunato Gory (Italian sculptor, active c. 1895–1925), depicting a young dancer kneeling in a graceful and particularly dynamic pose.

The composition is distinguished by its remarkable upward movement. The young woman’s body leans delicately forward while her two arms rise above her head in a sweeping, harmonious gesture. The finely modeled hands and fingers extend this line with great elegance. The slightly tilted face and serene expression subtly contrast with the body’s momentum, lending the work as a whole a presence that is both sensual and refined.

Gory pays particular attention to the contrast between the soft, smooth modeling of the female body and the more detailed rendering of the hair and facial features. The bronze retains a beautiful golden patina with warm tones, which particularly highlights the sculpture’s volumes, curves, and play of light.

The figure rests on an elegant oval pedestal of veined marble, whose natural, warm hues harmonize beautifully with the bronze’s patina.

The sculpture is signed “A. Gory” on the figure.

Originally from Florence and later active in Paris, Affortunato Gory belongs to that generation of Italian sculptors who successfully combined the classical tradition of sculpture with the more elegant and decorative aesthetic that emerged in France in the early 20th century. He is particularly admired for his female figures, characterized by the grace of their movement, the harmony of their proportions, and the quality of their modeling.

A particularly decorative and captivating work by Affortunato Gory, notable for the fluidity of its silhouette, the elegance of its movement, and its Art Deco aesthetic.
