Louis Samain (1834–1901) — Large Terracotta Sculpture “Water Carrier with Child”
Dimensions: 140 × 40 × 35 cm
Material: Terracotta
This impressive terracotta sculpture by Louis Samain, one of Belgium’s distinguished 19th-century sculptors, depicts a young water carrier balancing a jug on her head while holding her child. The expressive modelling, graceful posture and finely detailed drapery are characteristic of Samain’s refined sculptural language.
Louis Samain (Nivelles, 1834 – Ixelles, 1901) studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Brussels under Louis Simonis. After winning the Belgian Prix de Rome, he spent several years in Italy, where he further developed his style. His work received international recognition: he was awarded a gold medal at the 1889 Paris Universal Exhibition, and in 1895 his work was exhibited at the Société des Artistes Français in Paris.
With its impressive height of 140 cm, this sculpture has a strong, almost museum-like presence. The warm terracotta tone enhances its expressive depth and decorative appeal.
A remarkable and rare example of 19th-century Belgian sculpture.
