Auguste Levasseur – Diana The Huntress France, Circa 1900

An imposing French sculpture depicting Diana the Huntress, a work by the French sculptor Auguste Levasseur, dating from the late 19th / early 20th century.

The sculpture depicts Diana, the Roman goddess of the hunt, in the guise of an elegant young huntress. She is portrayed in a dynamic and classical pose, clad in richly draped garments with particularly fluid lines.

The refined modeling of the face, the clothing, and the numerous decorative details lend this sculpture a presence that is both elegant and lively.

In this composition, Levasseur combines classical mythology with the great tradition of French sculpture of the Belle Époque. The movement of the drapery and the attention to anatomy create a harmonious and particularly decorative composition from every angle.

The work is clearly signed “A. Levasseur”.

The base also retains its original brass plaque, bearing the inscription:

“DIANE CHASSERESSE
BY A. LEVASSEUR”

as well as the notations “Gold Medal of the Salon” and “Out of Competition”.

Auguste Levasseur was a French sculptor best known for his classical, mythological, and allegorical figures. His work follows in the tradition of late 19th-century French academic sculpture, characterized by elegant proportions, refined modeling, and great decorative richness.

A very beautiful and imposing French sculpture, dedicated to one of the great themes of classical mythology, retaining both the artist’s signature and its original title plaque.
