Louis XV Style Desk, Veneered Wood And Gilt Bronze, Stamped Durand & Fils, Circa 1880-1900
A desk of great finesse, made by the Parisian firm Durand & Fils, in the spirit of the Louis XV style, testifying to an exceptional level of craftsmanship and quality of materials.
The piece is executed in richly veneered wood, adorned with carefully composed marquetry offering a warm, dynamic decor. The slightly curved top elegantly follows the lines of the base and is highlighted by a finely chased ormolu gallery.
The front features three slightly curved drawers, each embellished with rich ormolu fittings decorated with rocailles and floral motifs. This refined ornamentation continues on the corners and cabriole-shaped curved legs, ending in finely worked sabots. The interior of the drawers, as well as the structure as a whole, testify to great precision of execution.
The piece is stamped "Durand & Fils" (several times), confirming its attribution to Gervais-Maximilien-Eugène Durand (1839-1920), a leading Parisian cabinetmaker specializing in interpretations of high-quality 18th-century furniture. His workshop won acclaim at the Exposition Universelle de Paris in 1889, where his creations were hailed for their stylistic authenticity and technical perfection.
Active during the Belle Époque, furniture stamped Durand & Fils is generally dated around 1880-1900.
Aligning elegance, functionality and historical significance, this desk is a choice piece for a refined interior or a high-level collection.
