Painterof military scenes, Oscar Lahalle was a pupil of Jean-PierreWachsmuth and Jean-Adolphe Beaucé. He exhibited at the Paris Salonbetween 1868 and 1900. A career officer, he took part in theItalian Campaign from 1859 to 1862 and the Mexican Campaign from1862 to 1867 as Staff Captain to Marshal Bazaine.Bazaine. He is the author of souvenirs (5 notebooks), invaluable documentsvaluable documents on the military campaigns of the Second Empire.
Ourdepicts a Zouave halt, reminiscent of his painting of1864 "Une halte de zouaves du 3erégiment en expédition au Mexique". These are the Zouaveswho took part in the main battles of the Mexican expeditionexpedition (Puebla, San Lorenzo, Oaxaca...) under the command ofColonel Mangin and Colonel Tourre de Chaussy. After taking Mexico CityMexico City in 1863, the French troops were left with the task ofpacify the state of Puebla and quell the rebellion. At the end of 1864,Marshal Bazaine (with whom the painter Lahalle worked)laid siege to the city of Oaxaca (perhaps in the backgroundof the painting), stronghold of one of the last Mexican resistance fightersrebel leader Porfirio Diaz.
