Jacques Sébastein Leclerc Dit Leclerc Des Gobelins -the Reaper's Nap
Artist: Jacques Sébastein Leclerc Dit Leclerc Des Gobelins
Jacques Sébastien LECLERC known as LECLERC DES GOBELINS Paris, 1733 – Paris, 1785 The Harvester's Siesta Oil on wood 23 x 30 cm (28.5 x 35 cm with frame) Inscription on the back "Jacques Sébastien Leclerc (1734-1785)" Son of Sébastien Leclerc II (1676-1763) and grandson of Sébastien Leclerc (1637-1714), Jacques Sébastien Leclerc known as Leclerc des Gobelins (because he lived at the Gobelins) was first a painter of genre scenes like his father, or even of gallant scenes and "daring scenes" as the Lorraine art historian Jeanne Lejeaux writes. The art of Leclerc des Gobelins is recognizable by its beautiful landscapes with exquisite foliage reminiscent of 17th-century Flemish art, its vibrant and beautiful colors, and the refined elegance of its figures with their delicate, youthful faces, perfectly suited to amorous scenes! Our painting certainly illustrates one of those bawdy tales of the 18th century. The landscape is particularly successful, very delicate and beautifully colored, as are the elegant and expressive young women, each in their different poses facing the handsome young man!
