This work depicts a peasant scene tinged with morality and gallantry. In the center, a young girl is severely reprimanded by her mother in the dark interior of a barn. The attentive viewer, however, notices, in the background, the silhouette of a man who seems to slip away discreetly, reinforcing the idea of a surprise encounter and a repressed fault.
The composition, rich in picturesque details – sheaves of wheat, a barrel, a watering can, agricultural tools, an opening onto a flower garden – illustrates both rustic life and the narrative dimension, dear to 18th-century artists.
