"Jules Achille Lecaron - Portraits Of Jesus And Mary His Mother"
Jules Achille Lecaron, Paris, 1813 – after 1865. Portrait of Jesus and Mary his mother. A pair of oils on wood, 15 x 12 cm (25 x 21 cm with frame). Countersigned on the back "Painted by Achille Lecaron in Orsay (Seine & Oise)" on old labels. Very fine small 19th-century giltwood frames. On display at the gallery. Jules Achille Lecaron was a painter of genre scenes and religious subjects, based near Paris in Orsay (Seine-et-Oise). He exhibited regularly at the Paris Salon between 1835 and 1865, initially portraits, then genre scenes, as well as some religious scenes, including a notable Incredulity of Saint Thomas in 1840. As a religious painter, he worked notably around 1840 on the painted Stations of the Cross for Amiens Cathedral. Our paintings combine two of Lecaron's strengths: his mastery of portraiture and his expertise in religious art. For this is a pair of portraits, of Jesus and Mary, his mother. The work is exquisite, beautiful, with a gentle yet well-defined rendering of the face and clothing. There is also a striking resemblance between the two figures, which is a nice touch!
