And at the Universal Exhibition of Madrid in 1856 where he presented six landscapes which earned him an honorable mention. Appointed a full member of the Academy of San Fernando in 1859, he was also a knight of the Order of Charles III and a member of the African Institute and the Archaeological and Historical Society of Charente. A romantic landscape painter, Gato de Lema is known for his compositions where he painted monuments, ruins and seasides in the 1840s and 1850s. Our painting is a beautiful gouache with a beautiful rendering of the sea with a port in the distance and a large church. In the foreground, many figures enliven the composition. A picturesque landscape treated with beautiful light and many details.
