Victor de Grailly was a student of Jean Victor Bertin, whose beautiful and delicate depictions of light in the Île-de-France region he emulated. He painted landscapes in the style of 17th-century Dutch painters, which he exhibited in Paris from 1830 to 1880. His works are held in numerous museums in France (in Rennes, Dijon, Melun, and Elbeuf), but the only exhibition dedicated to him took place at the Washburn Gallery in New York in 1975. Some indeed consider him a representative of the highly luminist North American landscape school known as the Hudson River School.
