French or Danish School, mid-19th century. Ship Approaching the Port. Oil ooncanvas.Signed lower right ("M.."). 33 x 46 cm (53 x 66 cm with frame). Collector's label on the back: "Ronarch" (Admiral Pierre Alexis Ronarc'h (1865-1940)?). Good condition. Very fine frame decorated with laurel wreaths, geometric incised decoration, and a frieze of heart-shaped motifs. The picturesque subject, the deep blue sea, the colorful little figures, and the port, undoubtedly on the Normandy coast, are all elements reminiscent of the art of the Romantic painter Charles Euphrasie Kuwasseg, although the painting is unsigned. Very fine period frame and undoubtedly of prestigious provenance (collection of Admiral Ronarc'h?).
