Claude-Antoine Ponthus-Cinier, born in Lyon in 1812 and died in the same city in 1885, was a painter, draftsman, and etcher.
Recognized as the leader of the Lyon school of the Neoclassical movement, his style blends academic rigor with poetic sensibility.
He studied under Paul Delaroche in Paris and won the Second Prize of Rome in 1841.
This prize enabled him to spend two years in Italy (1842–1844) at his own expense.
There he visited Venice, Florence, Rome, and Naples—trips that would have a lasting influence on his taste for light and inspirational landscapes.
His works depict real landscapes of southeastern France and central and southern Italy, often featuring ruins and historic monuments.
Upon his return to France, he settled in Lyon. He exhibited regularly at the Lyon Salon from 1837 to 1885 and at the Paris Salon from 1841 to 1867.
The fine arts museums in Lyon, Chalon-sur-Saône, Besançon, Brou, and Chambéry hold several of his works.
