He was a student at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Ghent from 1829 to 1832 under Jan Baptist Lodewyck Maes and Pieter Van Hanselaere. He then traveled to Rome and won the Grand Prix at the Academy of Saint Luke in 1835. In 1838, he returned to Ghent where he exhibited regularly at the Salon. The Museum of Fine Arts in Ghent holds a beautiful painting by him entitled The Robber's Wife Fleeing with Her Child (1834).
