Rare and exceptional gilt bronze medieval sconce dating from the 12th-13th century, depicting a copyist monk seated in front of his writing box, busy at his writing work. The figure, dressed in monastic robes and wearing tonsure, is seated on an elegant, finely treated molded stool.

This remarkable little sculpture retains a significant amount of its original gilding, a particularly rare feature for this type of medieval object. The quality of the modelling and the liveliness of the composition testify to a work of great finesse, probably French or English.

The work is very rare.

The work is to be compared with a comparable model preserved at the Musée National du Moyen Âge in Cluny, dated circa 1300, as well as a similar sconce preserved at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and attributed to the 12th century.

On the reverse, the bronze with its beautiful brown patina retains its old attachment tenon.
