Empire Period Mahogany And Gilt Bronze Writing Desk

Rare lady's writing desk with tiered top and cardboard insert. Veneered on allmahogany veneer and mounted on casters, this is a middle piece of furniture designed to be moved as needed, or even brought up to the fireplace to keep warm in winter. Our desk rests on 4 gilded bronze legsgilded bronze, linked by a curved brace. It opens with a drawer fitted with mahogany sliding compartments. The leather-covered sliding top is surmounted by a tier opening to 3 small drawers, the right-hand one for the inkwell and 2 leather-covered cardboard drawers above. Fine chased and mercury-gilt bronze trim with water-leaf ring motifs, claw feet and a fine gilt bronze keyhole with lion's head and palmettes. Late Empire or Restoration period. Circa 1810's.

A rare piece of fine furniture. Ideal for use as a writing table in a bedroom or living room.

Excellent condition: the antique varnish has been cleaned and repolished by our cabinetmaker; no accidents or missing parts. High-quality chasing and mercury gilding on the bronzes. The gilded leather upholstery was redone 40 years ago. During a previous restorationrestoration, a glass plate was cut to protect the leather top. A fortunate initiative, very well carried outwe have kept it as it is and it will be delivered with the furniture.
