Gilt Bronze
Artist: Courvoisier
Elephant clock in finely chased bronze with antique patina and gilding. In a case attributed to Jean-Joseph de Saint-Germain, the case features an enameled dial with Roman and Arabic numerals indicating the hours in Roman numerals and the minutes in increments of five in Arabic numerals by two gilded reperced copper hands. It is signed "Courvoisier A Paris".
It is adorned with a winged child flying on clouds and holding a bow in his left hand; the circular case is underlined by flowery and leafy garlands and rests on a barring elephant, trunk raised, camped on a rocaille terrace richly embellished with flowers.
The Maison Robert & Courvoisier was one of the most famous Swiss watchmakers of the last years of the 18th century and the first decades of the following century. It was awarded the "Horloger du roy" patent in 1725. In 1811, after Aimé Robert retired from the business, the company took the name "Courvoisier & Cie" and remained in business for almost two decades.
