Set Of 3 Monumental Traditional Kokeshi Dolls - Tōhoku, Japan, 20th Century
Rare set of three monumental traditional Japanese dolls in turned wood, called Kokeshi Dentō. Originating from the mountainous Tōhoku region in the north of the archipelago, these sleekly designed sculptures embody the quintessence of the Mingei folk art movement.
Their presence here is remarkable because of their monumental format (over 60 cm high), a rare size for this type of handcrafted piece that makes them veritable objects of interior decoration or collectible architecture. Each piece is signed or stamped under its base by the master turner who shaped it.
Lot details (from left to right):
1. Yajirō-style kokeshi (H. 60 cm):
This model is distinguished by the use of a wood species with a very graphic and marked natural grain. The cylindrical body is adorned with stylized camellia (tsubaki) motifs hand-painted with green and red pigments, framed by characteristic concentric lines. Calligraphic signature under the base.
2. Naruko style kokeshi (H. 61 cm):
Armorizing the creamy tone of traditional wood, this piece features a voluminous head assembled using traditional technique and an elegantly curved silhouette. The painted flower decoration is accompanied by wide bands of red pigment on the shoulders and base. Craftsman's stamp under the base.
3. Large monumental Tōgatta-style Kokeshi (H. 62 cm) :
The masterpiece of the lot for its presence. It features a powerful graphic depicting a large radiant chrysanthemum painted in broad strokes. On the reverse, the base features a long calligraphic honorific inscription indicating that it has been awarded the Japanese Ministry of Labor Prize, a highly prestigious official distinction rewarding the craftsman's high quality and skill.
Beautiful overall condition for pieces of this size and period. The wood is sound, heavy and stable. The original colors and pigments have remained very warm, complemented by a superb natural patina. Slight marks, small superficial scratches or minor wear discolorations entirely in keeping with their age and authenticity.
