The Minotaur emerges from a Greek-style setting, with meanders and foliage rendered in black linework, almost architectural in nature.

In Garouste’s work, “the Indian” is never a mere anecdotal detail. Since his play “Le Classique et l’Indien” (1977), he has embodied the painter’s double: in contrast to the Classical—reason, order—the Indian embodies the savage, madness, and the uncontrollable. A theme he would explore for more than thirty years, culminating in his “Indiennes” series.

The full title of this print is taken from a book that Michel Onfray dedicated to his painting in 2009.
