Walloon Cavalry Sword Germany 17th Century. Marked With The Passau Wolf And 1414

Artist: Passau / Solingen
This cavalry sword is called a "Walloon" and is of Germanic origin, dating from the 17th century. These swords were very popular among the Dutch and German nobility during the 30 Years' War (1618-1648), due to their solidity and versatility. In addition to the Passau wolf mark, the blade bears the number 1414, which is of course not the date of manufacture but a protective number, a kind of talisman with multiple interpretations.
BLADE: This is a hexagonal-section blade that time has made lenticular. In the first quarter of the blade, a central fuller in which we find the inscription: x 1 4 1 4 x
After this inscription Passau's running wolf  on each face. Blade length =81.2 cm, width at shoulder= 3.1 cm, thickness at shoulder= 8 mm
GUARD : This is the classic two-shell hilt, which when viewed from the front presents a silhouette in the shape of a card game heart. The two shells are pierced with small holes, and slightly domed. The cross gaurd is extended by a small quillon curved towards the blade. The knuckle bow is complemented by two secondary branches and ends screwed onto the pommel. Another guard branch also joins the pommel, to which it is attached by a screw. Note the thumb protection ring typical of Germanic weapons.
POMMEL : it is made of iron, ovoid in shape, and ends with a small flattened knob on which the blade tang is riveted. The square shape of the screw heads at the pommel confirms early manufacture, since from the late 17th century onwards, screw heads are hemispherical in shape.
FUSEE: it is spool-shaped, covered with the original twisted brass thick twisted wire binding At each end, original brass ferrules, in good condition.

In conclusion, this is a cavalry weapon of indisputable authenticity, entirely original and never restored, which has come to us in remarkable condition. Taking it in hand takes us back to the fracas of the 30 Years' War and the multiple conflicts of the 17th century. After the Flanders War of the 1670s, French troops, convinced by these weapons, in turn adopted the Walloons, which became the model 1679 sword, the first regulation model for the entire French army.
