Gilbert-privat (1892-1969) The Rune After The Storm Basque Country
Artist: Gilbert-privat
Auguste GilbertPRIVAT,dit GILBERT-PRIVAT
(Toulouse 1892 - Soulac sur Mer 1969)
La Rune après l'orage
Aquarelle
H. 17 cm; L. 23.5 cm sight
Signed lower right. Located and dated 1944. Titled on the back.
The son of a wood sculptor, he logically began his training in his father's workshop in Toulouse, before moving on to the city's École des Beaux-Arts. He then continued his studies in Paris, where he joined Jules Coutan's sculpture workshop at the ENSBA.
On his return from mobilization during the Great War, he exhibited rapidly in the great Parisian salons from 1920 onwards, and was awarded the Prix de Rome the following year. In his works, he developed the purest Art Deco style, which won him awards as early as 1925 at the Exposition des Arts Décoratifs.
Many of his sculptural works are one-offs, but some were published by other companies such as D-I-M or the Manufacture de Sèvres. Large-scale projects included decorative fountains, Monuments aux Morts and Monuments à la Résistance. His links with the Périgord are carnal... In 1937, he married Odette de Puiffe de Magondeaux (a family originally from La Coquille, then Saint-Cyprien), who went on to publish a biography of her husband sixty years later. Locally, Gilbert-Privat left important bronzes, notably of Fénelon and Montaigne (both cast in 1942), as well as the bust of Yvon Delbos in Montignac. The MAAP in Périgueux preserves several of his sculptures.
Our watercolor takes off from Périgord and presents us with a misty landscape at the foot of the Rune in the Basque Country. The foreground shows us a few houses before the earth rises, changing hues to join that of the gray sky, blending mountain and sky.
