The Vézère in Autumn at Saint-Cirq-du-Bugue
Oil on canvas
H. 46 cm; W. 55 cm
Signed lower left, dated 1921
Louis Cabié, a renowned artist in France, particularly in the Bordeaux region, traveled extensively throughout the southwest of France during his lifetime. A student of Harpignies, whose passion for vegetation is reminiscent of the Barbizon school, he continued to capture the simplicity of picturesque French landscapes until his death. Spectacular trees, forest settings, places steeped in history, enchanting valleys, or even a landscape in its purest form, which he imbued with a vibrant contrast.
Around 1900, as an occasional visitor, Cabié frequented the small village of Saint-Cirq-du-Bugue, where he painted numerous views of the church and the houses nestled against the hillside. These landscapes, often bathed in sunlight, focus on a corner of a small valley or open onto the Vézère Valley and the wooded hills on the opposite bank. This village, located a few kilometers from Les Eyzies, offers many charming viewpoints that Louis Cabié captured beautifully on canvas and paper. Our landscape was painted near Campagne, towards Les Eyzies, with the Vézère River to the left of the composition, at the foot of the hills. This misty, golden valley, a generously sized work, is a piece of poetry from our beloved Périgord region. This oil painting, with its rich tones, is a small Périgord gem, created in the autumn of 1921.
