Pascal Magis was born in 1955 in Aurillac, Cantal, and grew up in the Périgord Noir, in the small village of Meyrals. In fact, this village has become a must for contemporary art lovers, with several galleries based there, including Magis' studio, kept open by his niece.
Pascal Magis was born in Aurillac, in the Cantal region of France.
A Beaux-Arts graduate, he specialized in tapestry and became a cartonnier-lissier. From 1988 onwards, he devoted himself exclusively to painting, his preferred field.
After graduating from the Beaux-Arts, he specialized in tapestry and became a cartonnier-lissier.
Magis' work can be placed within the "lyrical abstraction" movement. Generally working on large formats, he throws ample movements onto his canvases bringing shapes and stains, sometimes drips, in a highly mastered gestural writing. His palette is lilting, bright colors rubbing shoulders with deep hues, ruptures contrasting with immaculate whites.
Generous and passionate, Pascal Magis, a prolific and internationally acclaimed artist, passed away at the end of 2011, leaving behind many major works in abstract art, far removed from the figurative currents of Périgord artists.
