Louis Cabié (1853-1939) Oak Near Bordeaux Gironde Tree
Artist: Louis-alexandre Cabié
Louis-Alexandre CABIÉ
(Dol-de-Bretagne 1853 - Bordeaux 1939)
Oak near Bordeaux
Oil on canvas
H. 38 cm; L. 50 cm
Signed lower left, dated 1900
Provenance:
- Private collection, Bordeaux
Louis Cabié, a renowned artist in France and particularly in the Bordeaux region, even during his lifetime, circulated in the greater southwest throughout his life. A pupil of Harpignies, whose passion for vegetation is reminiscent of the Barbizon school, he remained faithful to the simplicity of picturesque French landscapes until his death. Spectacular trees, forest atmospheres, places steeped in history, bewitching valleys, or even a landscape in its simplest form that he knew how to enhance with a vital contrast.
Our canvas, not precisely located, is to be placed in the Bordeaux area, a vast zone where Cabié set down his easel episodically for several decades, escaping from the city where he had one of his studios. Pessac, the banks of the Garonne near Portets, Parentis en Born, etc. - it's hard to place this large oak for the moment without finding another work on which the painter would have left a mention.
