José Corréa is a French painter, illustrator, and writer of Portuguese origin, born on February 4, 1950, in Fédala, Morocco. Arriving in France at a young age, he developed an artistic sensibility early on, nurtured by drawing and observing the world. His vocation took a decisive turn in the Dordogne region, where he met the writer and painter François Augiéras, a major and unique figure in Périgord art, who introduced him to painting and encouraged him to pursue a free and personal artistic path. Settling permanently in the Dordogne, José Corréa became an artist deeply attached to this region, which he explored with sketchbook and brushes in hand. The Périgord region, with its rivers, villages, rolling landscapes, and ever-changing light, is a key source of inspiration in his work. The banks of the Isle River, the Dordogne Valley, and the Vézère River appear regularly in his watercolors and paintings, rendered with great sensitivity and an intimate approach to the landscape. A multifaceted artist, José Corréa also pursues a career as an illustrator and draftsman. He creates numerous portraits of writers, musicians, and cultural figures, while also illustrating literary works, travel books, and personal journals. His work is distinguished by its expressive lines, a particular attention to faces, and an ability to tell stories through images, often in dialogue with text. Exhibited both in France and abroad, José Corréa shares a humanist and poetic vision of the world through his art. In the Dordogne, where he lives and works, his work is regularly featured in exhibitions and cultural events, demonstrating his deep connection to the local artistic scene. With his sensitive and nomadic perspective, he establishes himself as an artist for whom the Dordogne is not merely a place to live, but a true inner landscape.
