Gilbert Swimberghe (1927–2015), Oil On Panel

Artist: Swimberghe Gilbert
Gilbert SWIMBERGHE (1927–2015), oil on panel, signed on the reverse and stamped “Swimberghe.” Dimensions: 52 x 32 cm (unframed).
Outer frame dimensions: 56 x 36 cm

Born in Sint-Andries, Bruges, Gilbert Swimberghe was a painter, draftsman, sculptor, screen printer, and mosaic artist. He studied at the academies in Bruges and Saint-Josse-ten-Noode. He began in an Expressionist style and later evolved toward abstraction. He moved from a structured and monumental expressionism to an abstraction in which forms and colors create an illusory space (the “pink,” “yellow,” and “yellow-green” periods). Beginning in 1962, he created stone mosaics and white reliefs. After 1976, he produced large drawings on paper and, beginning in 1978, white canvas surfaces that avoid any suggestion of depth. He was a member of various groups, including the “Mesure” group.
Starting in 1990, he shifted from gray to an intense blue, creating—through his brushwork, texture, and movement in space—a metaphysical dimension.
