Esoteric Sword With Secret Society Motto
This sword is very special because of the mottoes on its pommel, which leave no doubt that it was used for "confidential", not to say "dark" cermonies ... The French motto speaks for itself: "Sais, Ose, Veux, Tais-toi" (= Know, will, dare, keep silent) which means knowledge, courag will with clear intention, and silence in relation to the uninitiated.
And on the other side "Nox, Lux nostra" "Night is our Light", which could remind the fallen archangel, carrier of light
The weapon itself is a 19th-century rapier, although its style is freely inspired by the 17th century. It is complete, with its original scabbard.
BLADE: After a very short 5mm ricasso, it takes on a diamond-shaped cross-section, the two edges gradually join to form the point. Blade length 80.3 cm, width at ricasso 1.9 cm, thickness at ricasso7.8 mm The blade is in general good condition, with a few marks of surface oxidation. There are no manufacturer's marks, for evident reasons...
GUARD : This is a "ring" hilt . with a large ring protecting the outer part of the hand. A smaller oval ring, forged in a single piece with the previous one protects the inner part of the hand. The quillons are straight, with the upper quillon splitting at the end. The knuckle bow ends making a volute near the pommel. All these are engraved with stylized plant motifs.
POMMEL: itis a flattened spheroid and topped by a small knob. I can't see if the tang is riveted to this pommel; it's more likely that it's a screwed pommel. As mentioned above, there are the inscriptions: on the outer side "Sais, Ose ,Veux,Tais-toi " and on the inner face "Nox, Lux Nostra"
GRIP : It's made of wood,surrounded by a twisted wire binding alternating with a single wire binding of largerdiameter. It is in perfect condition. The ferrules at each end are engraved with a small decoration
SCABBARD : This is the original one, It is made of iron and covered with high-quality stitched leather. Scabbard entrance and chape are iron. The only defect is the missing attachment button, which allows the sword to be worn on the harness during ceremonies.
