"Sword Of A Senior Military Justice Officer, 19th Century."
19th-century Military Justice Senior Officer's Sword. Brass hilt with a globular pommel surmounted by a rivet button. The guard has a thin, single branch on the right side. Rare: Folding guard decorated with a fasces and axe surrounded by a wreath of olive and oak leaves against a background of six flags. The fixed guard, which was intended to hold the ornament, is smooth. Why was the decoration riveted to the removable back section, and for what purpose? It is difficult to believe this was a simple mistake. This sword therefore presents a puzzle. Leather grip with re-edged wire wrapping. The 80.5 cm straight blade is lozenge-shaped with two fullers and has a black patina with oxidation spots. Overall length 90.5 cm. No scabbard.
