Alpine shepherd’s barrel from Savoie, late 19th century.
Made of oak, carved on one side with a rosette or daisy motif, carved directly from the solid block of wood. This floral rosette motif is emblematic of Alpine folk art (Savoie or Switzerland). During the long winter months, local shepherds and artisans commonly carved everyday objects (water bottles, salt shakers, butter molds) with geometric or floral motifs. Engraved on the opposite side is its capacity of 80 centiliters. It is a typical example of French folk art, often stamped or engraved with its exact capacity.
In good overall condition, with signs of use. Length 15.5 cm, front diameter 9.8 cm, height including handle 18 cm.
