Madonna In Prayer, Sassoferrato Workshop/circle Of – Painting On Canvas
Artist: Sassoferrato
An extraordinary oil painting on canvas depicting theMadonna in prayer, based on the famous works of Giovanni BattistaSalvi, known as Sassoferrato (Sassoferrato, August 25, 1609 – Rome, August 8,1685), a cultured and refined painter who was among the most highly regarded masters ofsacred art in 17th-century Rome. The painting draws on the classical iconography made famous bythe master from the Marche region: the Virgin absorbed in meditation, with her head bowedand her hands clasped, immersed in a mystical atmosphere of intense spirituality andsilent contemplation. The dark background enhances the luminosityof the flesh tones and the chromatic depth of the traditional blue Marian mantle. Thepictorial quality and stylistic approach allow us to attribute thepainting to the master’s workshop or circle, within the context ofRoman devotional art production between the late 17th and early 18thcenturies. Following the extraordinary success of this Marian image,Salvi’s workshop, his entourage, and the Master himselfpainted a considerable number of them; the most famous are preserved at the Hermitage in St.Petersburg, the Prado Museum, in Venice at the Church of the Salute, at thePinacoteca in Perugia, and at the Diocesan Museum in Recanati. Sassoferrato drewinspiration for the Praying Virgin from Albrecht Dürer’s model.
