Oil On Canvas "saint Jean Baptiste" XVII° Century
Oil on canvas depicting Saint John the Baptist, 17th century period, in period gilded wood frame.
John the Baptist was an important figure in Christianity, leading an austere life on the banks of the River Jordan, where he baptized those who wished to be baptized. One day, Jesus asked him to be baptized, and it was then that he recognized him as the Messiah and said "behold the Lamb of God". Saint John the Baptist is depicted here seated on a rock by the river, accompanied by his lamb, holding a cross with a phylactery reading "ecce agnus dei" ("behold the lamb of God"). This naive portrait has a particular charm.
Good condition, use and maintenance restorations, repaints, pieces on the reverse, beautiful patina of the old gilding on the frame (wear visible on the photos) posterior frame.
