Sailor's Cross, Passion Cross, Popular, Late 19th Century
Artist: Art Religieux
Rare Passion cross known as Mariners' cross (it was used as a good luck charm on the prow of river boats, and can be found as an Ex-voto in certain churches along the Rhône...
I take over the description of the one in church of St Clair du Rhône:-
This cross distinguishes itself from the traditional cross by the presence, on either side of crucified Christ, instruments of passion on the upright . These include: pliers, hammer, nails and ladder used to crucify Jesus, rods and crown of thorns from the scourging, Judas' purse of thirty denarii, Malchus' lantern and the rooster of denial, ewer used to wash Pilate's hands and sponge, soldiers' dice and spear, ( sun and moon of Old and New Testaments, Jesus' tunic and Veronica's veil are not on my cross), skull (or Golgotha) of the hill's name"-.
And on mine, there's also a heart, coffin, naval anchor, Christ's hands and feet.
42 cm x 19cm. Light, resinous wood, cut, painted, glued and nailed, untouched patina, apart from a little gluing on scale and spears, of which a point is probably missing;
I have no notion of geographical origin, as bargemen were present on all European waterways.
Probably late 19th or 1900.
