Large Lace-maker's Magnifying Glass, Blown Glass, 18th-century Provence, Good Condition
Artist: Art Populaire
Here is a superb "lace-maker’s magnifying glass" with a tall, hollow stem, made from blown glass—a beautiful design reproduced in J. Bellangé’s book, *Verre d’usage et de prestige* (Glass for Everyday Use and Prestige), which identifies it as belonging to a shoemaker (Museum of Grasse).
Placed between the work surface and the light source, this glass vial, filled with water (melted snow), served as a magnifying glass to facilitate and magnify the artisan’s work and reflect light onto it.
Beautifully blown work, translucent, with a clearly visible pontil mark in the tall hollow stem with a flanged base, and a ring in the middle of hollow stem.
This beautiful and rare piece of glassware has a good size: 33 cm x 15.5 cm.
I have another one listed in my Proantic gallery, slightly larger, same priced.
Condition: Excellent; no traces of limescale inside except at base of the neck; no flaws in this late 18th- or early 19th-century piece—already 200 years old....
