Golf Scene In Pau - After Allen C. Sealy (1893) - Lewis Hornor -

Artist: Sealy-allen-culpepper. 1850-1927)

Elegant and rare golf scene located in Pau, inspired by compositions created in 1893 by British painter Allen Culpepper Sealy, an artist emblematic of the beginnings of golf in continental Europe.

.

The scene depicts the player Lewis Hornor in the middle of putting, surrounded by elegantly dressed spectators, testifying to the refined atmosphere of the Pau Golf Club at the end of the 19th century, then a major resort for the British community. The landscape in the background, evoking the Pyrenean foothills, anchors the scene in its geographical context.

This composition was most likely inspired by Sealy's famous works depicting Lewis Hornor, a well-known figure at the Pau Golf Club at the time and frequently depicted in putting scenes.

This is an early chromolithograph, probably produced between the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The inscription "Allen C. Sealy 1893" visible at the bottom is integrated into the image and corresponds to the reproduced signature of the original work, in accordance with editorial usage of the time.

These representations were particularly prized by the English clientele staying at Pau, the first golf course on the European continent founded in 1856, and today constitute a decorative and historical testimony to the golden age of golf in Béarn.

Presented under glass in a sober frame, this work offers strong decorative power and will appeal both to golf enthusiasts and collectors of sports iconography or local history.
