This is a rare watercolor by Alphonse Baril, who here paints an extract from a dune in the Baie de Somme in 1884. With great finesse, Baril plays with beiges, browns, soft greens and sky blues.
Alphonse Amédée Baril was born on April 24, 1816 in Amiens (Somme). Like who, after working as a printer, became a cloth dresser,Alphonse first worked in the textile industry. In the 19th century,Amiens was renowned for its velvet factories. When his eldest son of his eldest son, on December 27, 1840, Alphonse Baril was a "gommeur de veloursgommeur de velours" but also a fabric dresser. It is not known when he gave up his manufacturing job. In May 1851, he became a drawing teacher and then painter and photographer, a profession he pursued in the years1860s and 1870s in a studio at 6, rue de la Bibliothèque. He dieddied on August 18, 1888, aged 72.
Alphonse Baril was Gédéon's uncle.uncle of Gédéon Baril (1832-1906). A student at the Paris School of Fine ArtsParis, he was a caricaturist and writer. A friend of Jules Verne, heillustrated his short story "Dix heures en chasse" published in 1881.
There are very few works by Baril on the market, a few in his region, only 2 works listed for sale, including a watercolor from 1856, 26 x 39.5 cm, sold for €900 excluding fees at Arcadia in Amiens on 22/10/2011.
