Sarreguemines, Pair Of Engobe Marbled Vases
Rare pair of fine earthenware covered vases, decorated with marbled slip, handles with goat heads.
Emile Decker (1), quoting Brongniart, Director of the Musée de Sèvres, describes this decorative process:
"Marbling is done by putting spots of different colors on the slip and shaking the pieces in such a way as to make these colors spread out in all sorts of directions. They form veins in the manner of marble. The success of the marbling depends on the skill of the workman."
These bicentennial pieces show some signs of their age, incomplete horns, small missing parts.
One of the lids has been restored.

Diameter of opening: 6.70 cm
Socle: 9 x 9 cm
Few Sarregueminois objects with marbling decoration are known to us.
A similar pair of the same vases, but without the lids, is displayed in the showcases of the Musée de Sarreguemines.
