This late 17th-century Madonna and Child from central Italy presents itself as a work of intimate devotion. The shaded background underlines an almost lunar sensuality and an assumed archaism. The work's physiognomy and treatment of drapery link it to the regional schools of Umbria and the Marches, but it also bears witness to a clear post-Tridentine tradition and seeks to move the faithful with a look of prophetic melancholy. The artist's characteristic features suggest a master familiar with Roman chiaroscuro, but rooted in a more popular and direct language: the Child's hand, outstretched towards the Mother's face, and the Virgin's elongated fingers evoke a late mannerism tinged with Baroque restraint. This is a strikingly textured painting, where the crackling of the skin seems to underline the fragility of the sacred, transforming this depiction of motherhood into a study of the restrained tenderness and the gravity of the theological destiny shared by the two figures.
