Fougères - rue Nancon
A watercolor of rue de Nancon in Fougères at the beginning of the 20th century. This document is a testimony to the "Vieux Fougères" that existed before the bombings of June 1944.
The three corbelled houses, visible on the watercolor, are also featured on old postcards from the 1900s. One of these three houses was then occupied by the bistro "au rendez-vous des amis - Brisbard débitant".
After the bombings of June 1944, two of the three houses were demolished, but the one that housed the former bistro still stands today.
On May 2, 1909, Eugène Hoffmann wrote in the Journal des Artistes: "M. Millard's watercolors are interesting: fairground in Fougères and the Rue du Commerce in Nevers, radiantly lit". At the 1926 Salon des Indépendants, Millard also exhibited the pig market in Fougères (1911).
It is likely that the watercolor of rue Nancon predates 1909, when the artist the champ de foire.
