Reliquary of Blessed John Berchmans - with episcopal certificate - Bruges, 1867
Description:
Authentic silver-plated circular reliquary theca with glass bezel, containing a relic of Blessed Jean Berchmans
A young Flemish Jesuit of the 17th century, Jean Berchmans (1599-1621) was renowned for his exemplary piety and fidelity to religious rules, becoming a figure of sanctity for Catholic youth.
The relic is set at the center of a devotional montage in polychrome paperolles (red, white and gold) on a gilded textile background, forming a floral composition typical of the second half of the 19th century. The peripheral handwritten titulus identifies the relic.
The reverse features an antique closure system with intact red wax seal on handwritten paper, ensuring the authenticity and integrity of the theca.
The set is accompanied by its original document of authenticity dated 1867, issued by Joannes-Josephus Faict, Bishop of Bruges, specifying the origin of the relic: ex habitu B. Joannis Berchmans (from his vestments).
