Caricature Candlestick, Patinated Regule, Frédérick Lemaître, Early 19th-20th Century
An astonishing and rare caricature candlestick, in regula with a dark bronze and gilded patina, depicting the actor Frédérick Lemaître in his role in "La Lune", a famous 19th-century comedian known for his dramatic roles and expressive acting. The stooped posture, exaggerated face and treatment of the drapery place this piece in the tradition of theatrical and satirical representations of the late 19th century. The figure, in the round, supports a candlestick wick, the whole resting on a circular base. Beautiful original burnished patina with vestiges of gilding. Founder's mark "AB" under the base to be identified.
Height 26.8cm, width and depth approx. 7cm, diameter of base 11cm. Very good overall condition, note normal patina wear and a few traces of time consistent with age, small hole in bottom of wick. Approx. 1 kg
