Corozo Nut Snuffbox, Napoleonic Period - France - Early 19th Century
Fine carved oval tabatière in corozo nut, handcrafted in the Napoleonic period, circa 1800. The lid is decorated with a religious scene in bas-relief depicting two kneeling winged figures, probably angels, arranged on either side of a cross erected on an altar. The decoration is framed by stylized plant motifs, giving the whole a symbolic and decorative character.
The interior, hollowed out of the mass, has a warm, homogeneous patina, testifying to the object's age. The lid is hinged by an antique metal hinge. The reverse is decorated with carved radiating motifs, typical of the popular workmanship of the period.
A fine object of devotion or curiosity, combining utilitarian function and religious iconography, characteristic of turn-of-the-19th-century craftsmanship.
