Tobacco Box/tabatière In Corozo Nut From The Napoleonic Period - France - Early 19th Century
Tobacco box in carved corozo nut, Napoleonic period, early 19th century. Shaped like a shuttle, this rare folk object features rich, finely carved decoration in relief on all sides.
One side depicts a religious scene with a figure praying before a cross beneath an architectural arch, while the other shows a reclining figure in a stylized landscape. The ends and borders are adorned with delicately worked floral and geometric motifs.
The box opens with a hinged lid revealing a compartment designed to hold snuff. Beautiful honey-brown patina characteristic of antique corozo.
