'memento Mori' Skull In Carved And Polychrome Wood - European - 18th Century
A small, formerly polychrome, carved wooden skull representing a stylized death's head in the spirit of devotional objects and meditations on the vanity of life. The surface shows traces of old polychromy in brown-ochre and gold tones, now largely patinated by time, giving the object a beautiful, authentic wear. The modeling is intentionally naive and expressive, with deep eye sockets, an openwork nasal cavity, and a simplified jaw, characteristic of folk or monastic productions intended for spiritual contemplation. Several small lateral holes are visible, probably intended for attachment or mounting in the past (rosary, reliquary, portable altar, or element of the crucifixion). This type of object belongs to the tradition of memento mori and vanitas paintings, widely disseminated in Europe during the 17th and 18th centuries, particularly in religious circles of Central and Southern Europe.
