Pair Of Satsuma Vases, Ninzan Workshop — Japan, Meiji Period, Circa 1890–1910
A pair of Satsuma vases with an ovoid body, a flared trumpet neck, and a ring foot.
Ivory-glazed crackled stoneware, overfired polychrome glazes and moriage, with gold highlights.
Decoration arranged in superimposed registers: the main sides feature scenes of scholars and dignitaries in court robes in tree-lined gardens; the rendering of the faces is of a higher quality than typical production. Associated symbolic motifs—peonies, chrysanthemums, pomegranates, pine trees—complemented by cartouches of lakeside landscapes on the shoulder and geometric brocade friezes as a frame.
Handles in the round formed of turquoise-enameled dragons holding golden rings.
Floral decoration on the neck in moriage enamel.
A perfectly matched pair.
Double red square hallmark beneath both bases.
