Rare “arte Povera” Folding Screen After Carle Vernet - Directoire / Consulate Period
An exceptional and rare four-panel folding screen featuring an Arte Povera (or Lacca Povera) design on an antique green lacquer background. This piece is a refined example of the taste of the Directoire period, marking the transition from the delicacy of the 18th century to the austerity of the First Empire.
The decoration consists of applied engravings, based on the works of Carle Vernet (1758–1836). It features the artist’s favorite themes: scenes of hound hunting, genre scenes, and neoclassical motifs such as winged caduceus, quivers, torches, and laurel wreaths.
The Arte Povera technique involves the meticulous application of engravings onto a painted surface, all protected by numerous layers of resin varnish.
The reverse side of the screen is treated with equal care, featuring molded panels painted in a shade of green.
