An Eight-panel Silver-leaf Folding Screen Depicting A Spring Scene
A distinctive eight-panel folding screen with a silver-leaf ground and golden clouds, depicting a spring scene with a rooster, hen, and chicks beneath a blossoming cherry tree. The composition is completed by a stream flowing among rocks and vegetation on the left side.
The slightly patinated silver-leaf background is enriched with golden clouds, creating a luminous and harmonious effect.
Signed in the lower right Chō Kagai. Executed in the 29th year of the Shōwa era (1954).
Chō Kagai (1880–1965) was a Japanese painter active between the late Meiji period and the Shōwa era. A student and nephew of Suzuki Kason, he worked in Komatsu, Ishikawa Prefecture. In 1929, he created the ceiling decoration of the main hall of the Akasaka Hikawa Shrine in Tokyo.
