An incense box (kōgō) made from a real shell, painted in gold on the inside with waka (和歌) inscriptions, likely of poetic or romantic character. The object recalls the shells used in the aristocratic game kai-awase (貝合わせ), though it is larger than the traditional examples employed for the game.
